Welcome to the London2gibraltar blog!
I aim to update the blog prior to the challenge to let people know what is happening, and then update most days during the challenge – mainly when I have reception on my phone or can find a computer with internet access!
Training has started and the enormity of the task ahead looms large in my mind. A minor setback in the form of a twisted ankle in the middle of August, followed by a second strain in the same place 8 days later was an auspicious start. After much resting and paranoia I started to train again last week, barley a month prior to the start of the run.
The ankle is holding up well, and to ensure it remains that way I have decided to try and focus on cycling the daily commutes as opposed to running them. Low impact physical exercise is key if I am to survive the 80 miles unscathed. An injury on the run would be awful, and carrying an impact injury into it would be even worse! The ride is very short, around 8.5km but the stop start of the traffic lights enables me to sprint the distance, stressing my muscles as they drive from a standing start to top speed. I have not counted the lights on the journey, but there seem to be thousands. I am also riding with a rucksack so have some weight to practice with. I am hoping that this intense exercise will make the most of the50 minutes training time on the bike at this stage.
Sam is currently in Spain, and he assures me that his preparation is ongoing. We will be doing some run training when he is back next week and will get some pictures up on the website and on this blog so you can follow our progress.
